First Guidelines for Vehicle Development Model Exchange published

21. December 2018/0 Comments/in Projects /by prostep ivip e.V.

Whereas parliaments still debate on realizing collaboration between Europe and Japan, prostep ivip recently published the first part of the SmartSE Domain-specific Systems Engineering Application Architectures: Plant Modeling I/F Guidelines for Vehicle Development Model Exchange (download via this link or via prostep ivip Media Library).

It is the result of the collaboration between prostep ivip, the French Institute SystemX and the members of METI‘s MBD Group (Aisin, Azapa, Denso, Hitachi, Honda, Jatco, Mazda, Mitsubishi Electric, Nissan, Panasonic and Toyota), envisioned in their Collaboration Agreement signed in September this year.

About the Guideline itself

The Smart Systems Engineering (SmartSE) project within the prostep ivip Association aims to foster the industrial use of FMI by defining use cases and a process description to ensure a smooth process integration between the engineering disciplines and the collaborating partners.

In order to be able to react fast regarding the fast changing state-of-the-art and domain-specific demands, a new series of documents was set up. By this, in addition to the prostep ivip SmartSE Recommendation, domain-specific guidelines for e.g. powertrain, virtual ECUs etc. can be internationally provided in a fast-track process. This series is called “Domain-specific Systems Engineering Application Architectures”.

The now published guideline can be applied within powertrain development. It aims at expansion of the model distribution, the improvement of quality of reconciliation using models, and the development of human resources who can accomplish model based development in the automotive industry through consolidating model interfaces as a de facto standard at different layers including auto manufacturers, suppliers, and auto industry cluster. Furthermore, the vehicle model which conforms to this guideline is offered to promote this purpose.

Thus, this document

  • is applied to systems, which own energy.
  • defines the direction of energy flow.
  • defines physical signals between subsystems and their directions and unit.
  • provides a vehicle model that conforms to itself.

Thus, it complements the SmartSE Recommendation PSI 11 V2 and provides domain-specific practical application examples.

The Association is presenting the prostep ivip Scientific Award 2019 for young academics. It offers a platform to present outstanding work to the wide audience of our community.

Students who are in their final year are invited to submit their master’s thesis or dissertation on a topic in the field of virtual product development by 31 January 2019.

The award is endowed with €1,000 for master’s theses and with €4,000 for dissertations.

The award ceremony will be held within the framework of the prostep ivip Symposium 2019.

Requirements: The thesis/dissertation must be submitted to the supervising university by 31 January 2019 at the latest and non-disclosure agreements must not apply to publication. The final theses/dissertations and an accompanying recommendation letter by the supervising professor must be submitted to prostep ivip by January 31st, 2019.

Please pass this information on to anyone who might be interested! Contributions to the Scientific Award should be sent to jochen.boy (at) prostep.org

We think it is important to use smart technologies in smart ways.

3. December 2018/0 Comments/in Events /by prostep ivip e.V.

“Conferences and trade fairs are things of the past; we now have the virtual space” – this was a view that could be heard frequently at the start of the new millennium in the days when “Second Life” was popular. Those days are long gone and now the general consensus is actually the complete opposite. To meet the challenges of the digital transformation, we need direct, authentic, personal communication – within businesses as well as with customers, partners and professional institutes.

That is why an event such as the prostep ivip Symposium is now more important than ever.

Some 700 participants (which is to say 100 more than last year) came to the MOC in Munich this year to find out more about best practices for the digital transformation of products and processes.

I was there in the company of the CENIT team. What did I find there? There was a committed, open and extremely well-informed discussion about Industry 4.0 and digital disruption. The participants took the opportunity to test the viability of new ideas; some opinions were confirmed while others were reformulated.

This type of possibility for active dialog must be encouraged. Since, given the dramatic acceleration in the speed of technological advance, we need a debate on the use of these technologies. How much of our autonomy do we humans want to give up? I believe that that is the decisive question in every sphere of life – in both the private and the professional environments as well as in social interactions.

If we fail in the future, it will not be because the technologies were not available to us but because we could not agree on how to use them.

What does that mean for our everyday business life? We must move on from the project-driven introduction of new IT solutions to the continuous assessment of the technologies of the future. We must give our organizations the capability to adapt innovation quickly and instill in our employees the confidence they need to adopt the process of change without anxiety.

Naturally, IT skills and the choice of the right technologies, the definition of the optimum processes and the choice of how people are organized and the skills they need will remain key elements for a successful digital transformation.

However, the weighting of the elements in the magic triangle for successful change projects is itself undergoing a dramatic transformation. Two components, the human and the process, are significantly increasing in importance as critical factors of success. Fear is the natural enemy of all change; confidence is the fuel for every successful transformation project.

In the future, we will therefore undoubtedly entrust much to artificial intelligence – but will NOT cede areas in which our agreement is essential, because how can we then remain in control and take our place as autonomous human beings in the autonomous world?

We think it is important to use smart technologies in smart ways. That is to say, to design a future that moves us forwards rather than consuming us.

Victor Hugo said that the future has many names: “For the weak it is the impossible; for the fainthearted, it is the unknown; for the valiant, it is the ideal.”

Let us be valiant!

Kurt Bengel, CEO CENIT AG
